7 tips for keeping our children safe this summer

June 25, 2020 - 1 minute read

Kids will be excited and may not be thinking about their personal safety so drivers need to be extra cautious in looking for child pedestrians during the summer months.

Kids who are not in school usually are out in their neighborhoods, around pools, parks and playgrounds, at summer activities or events, at vacation attractions, shopping malls, everywhere it seems.

Here are 7 tips for keeping our children safe this summer.

  1. Drive with your headlights on, even during the day, so that children can see you.
  2. Slow down and maintain a 20- to 30-second visual lead to identify unexpected problems.
  3. Scan between parked cars and other objects for indications that children are at play in the area.
  4. Look for clues such as balls and bike ramps that indicate children could be in the area.
  5. Expect the unexpected if there’s a chance children could dart into the road.
  6. Make eye contact with children who are about to cross the street and watch for their next step.
  7. Make sure you look for children at intersections, not just other vehicles.
